Introduction:
The Clinical Research Center was found at Kyoto Medical Center by the Ministry of
Health, Social Welfare and Labor of the Japanese Government in October 2003 and designated as the National Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. The Clinical Research Center consists of five divisions, Diabetes and Metabolism, Endocrinology, Preventive Medicine, Translational Medicine and Policies of Medical Care.
Division of Diabetes and Metabolism consists of four groups, Diabetes, Nutrition,
Complications and Cardiovascular Research groups. The Diabetes group led by Masakazu Hattori has focused research interest on secondary and tertiary prevention of type 2 diabetes, genetic susceptibility to diabetic nephropathy in humans and animal models, and genetic susceptibility to type 1 diabetes, mainly MHC (major histocompatibility complex)- or HLA(Human Lymphocyte Antigen)- linked type 1 diabetogenic genes.
The Nutrition group led by Dr. Noriko Sato has focused research interest on
metabolic syndrome and prevention of type 2 diabetes. The Complication group lead by Dr. Shigeo Kono has focused research interest on diabetic foot care and international collaboration on diabetes foot care with the WHO (world health organization) and Western Pacific Asian countries.
